The story of Mjejane Game Reserve begins in the early 19th century, during the reign of King Shaka, the formidable Zulu leader. Shaka sent his general, Soshangane, to conquer what is now Southern Mozambique. Captivated by the land’s beauty and fertility, Soshangane chose to settle there, defying the orders of King Shaka. This led to a turbulent period, and in 1828, King Shaka sent his brother, Dingane, to deal with Soshangane’s rebellion. This unrest caused many groups, including the Tsonga people, to move southward. One such group, led by Chief Mjejane, crossed into what is now South Africa and settled along the Crocodile River in the Kruger National Park, where they began farming and raising cattle.
