Africa Day: A Tribute to Culture, Conservation, and Unity

Celebrate the spirit of Africa from the heart of the bushveld.

Every year on May 25th, we celebrate Africa Day—a day that marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963 and serves as a moment for Africans across the globe to honour the strength, unity, and beauty of the continent. At Fifty-Five Mjejane Game Lodge, located within the breathtaking Mjejane Game Reserve, Africa Day is more than a commemoration. It’s a celebration of place, people, and purpose.

A Sanctuary for Wildlife and Nature

The name Mjejane is deeply rooted in local culture and tradition. This region, part of the Lowveld of Mpumalanga, is rich with the stories and legacies of the Shangaan, Zulu  and Swazi-speaking communities who have lived in harmony with the land for generations. These communities have passed down a wealth of oral history, folklore, traditional practices, and deep spiritual ties to nature—values that continue to shape the identity of the region today.

The bushveld here is not just a wilderness; it’s a living heritage site, where ancient knowledge of plants, wildlife, and seasons still resonates. From medicinal uses of local flora to ancestral customs around the land and wildlife, Mjejane is a place where history is not confined to books—it’s alive in the air, the soil, and the people.

A Haven of African Wildlife

Situated on the banks of the Crocodile River, Mjejane Game Reserve forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park ecosystem, one of Africa’s most iconic conservation areas. Here, guests can witness the Big Five—lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo—as well as cheetah, giraffe, hippos, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species in their natural habitat.

At Fifty-Five Mjejane, every safari experience is a chance to connect with Africa’s unique biodiversity, and every sunset over the bushveld is a reminder of the timeless beauty that Africa Day celebrates.

A Day of Unity and Purpose

Africa Day is also a call to unity across the continent, a celebration of our shared future and collective responsibility. It’s a day to reflect on how conservation, tourism, and cultural preservation can go hand in hand. At Fifty-Five Mjejane, we are proud to be part of a larger movement that honours Africa’s past while investing in its future—through sustainable practices, community partnerships, and storytelling that keeps Africa’s spirit alive.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a lifelong lover of the African bush, this is a day to appreciate what makes this continent extraordinary: its diverse cultures, resilient communities, rich traditions, and magnificent natural world.
